History of southern Thailand

ดินแดนคาบสมุทรมลายูนั้นมีประวัติศาสตร์ที่มีสภาพเป็นรัฐอิสระและบางครั้งก็มีสภาพตกอยู่ภายใต้การยึดครองของอาณาจักรอื่น สลับกันไปมาเป็นเวลายาวนาน เช่น ฟูนัน ศรีวิชัย มัจปาหิต สุโขทัย และอยุธยา


ชาวสยามตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่ในดินแดนคาบสมุตรมลายูมาเป็นเวลานนานแล้ว ก่อนที่ชาวฮินดูเดินทางมาจากอินเดียเพื่อค้าขายและเผยแพร่ศาสนา ซึ่งคนพื้นเมืองในเคดาห์รัฐตอนเหนือของมาเลเซีย พวกหนึ่ง คือ sam sam คือพวกสยามที่อาศัยอยู่บนแหลมมลายู สิ่งที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์หลายอย่างก็ยังคงอยุ่ เช่นการใช้ภาษา ขนบประเพณี การนับถือศาสนา Syuki ในหนังสือ Melayu Patanni กล่าวว่า ดินแดนมลายูมีชาวพืนเมืองดังเดิมอยู่ก่อนแล้ว ได้แก่ Semang and Sakai และยังมี Siam-Asli or Aboriginal Siamese (Syukri,1985,p.4,8) ชาวสยามได้มีอำนาจปกครองเมืองต่างๆ ตอนล่างของแหลมมลายู ได้แก่ ปาหัง เคดาห์ กลันตัน และปัตตานี รวมถึงเมืองตอนบนของคาบสมุตร โดยมีศูนย์กลางอำนาจของสยามอยู่ที่เมืองนครศรีธรรมราช (Syukri,1985,p.17)

เมืองปัตตานี ไทรบุรี ตรังกานู เปอร์ริส ปาหัง และกลันตันอยู่ใต้การปกครองของอาณาจักรศรีวิชัย แต่เมือหลังยุคทีอาณาจักรศรีวิจัยเริ่มหมดอำนาจลง อาณาจักรนครศรีธรรมราชมีอำนาจขึ้นมาปกครองเมืองต่างๆ บนคาบสมุครมลายู ได้แก่ สายบุรี ปัตตานี กลันตัน ปาหัง ไทยบุรี พัทลุง ตรัง ชุมพร บันทายสมอ สระอุเลา ตะกั่วป่า และกระ (wyatt,1994;p.33-34) แต่มีอำนาจปกครองตัวเอง เมืองดังกล่าวถูกแบ่งเป็น หัวเมืองนอกราชอาณาจักร ได้แก่ สายบุรี ปัตตานี กลันตัน ปาหัง และไทรบุรี ที่ต้องส่งเครื่องราชบรรณาการ 3 ปีครั้ง ส่วนเมืองที่เหลือ เป็นหัวเมืองในราชอาณาจักร จัดส่งเครื่องราช ปีละครั้ง

เมื่ออำนาจของศรีวิชัยหมดสิ้น คาบสมุครมลายูถูกแบ่งเป็น 2 ส่วน โดยสยามเข้ามายึดครองเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช เมืองต่างๆตอนบน และหัวเมืองมลายูตอนล่างจึงตกอยู่ภาตใต้อำนาจของราชอาณาจักรมัชปาหิตที่มีศูนย์กลางอยู่ที่เกาะชวา ซึ่งมีความห่างไกลดินแดนมลายู ทำให้อาณาจักรมัชปาหิตให้หัวเมืองต่างๆทำการปกครองตัวเองโดยอิสระ จนกระทั้งอาณาจักรมัชปาหิตล้มสลายเนื่องจากแพ้ต่อ Islamic Kingdom ในชวา ทำให้เมืองต่างๆ บนดินแดนมลลายูเป็นอิสระอีกครั้ง (Syukri,1985,p.14)

การมาของศาสนาอิสลามจากอินเดียเข้าสู่ดินแดนมลายู โดยในปี 1403 กษัตริย์มลายูฮินดูที่ครองเมืองมะละกาเข้ารีตนับถือศาสนาอิสลาม และต่อมากษัตริย์มหาวังสาเมืองเคดาห์ได้เปลี่ยนไปนับถือศาสนาอิสลามเช่นกัน ตลอดจนศาสนาอิสลามข้ามาประเทศสยาม ถ้าสยามคนได้เข้ารีตก็จะเรียกว่า” samsam” (Syukri,1985,p.12)

การมาของชาวปาไซ Pasai ผู้นับถือศาสนาอิสลามที่อพยพหนีสงครามจากเกาะสุมาตรามาอาศัยที่ปัตตานี ทำให้เริ่มมีชุมชนชาวมุสลิมขึ้น จนกระทั้งการเปลี่ยนมานับถือศาสนาอิสลามของเจ้าเมือง รายาอินทิรา และได้จัดพิธีราชาภิเษกรายาอินทิราเป็นสุลต่านตามประเพณีอิสลาม และมีพระนามใหม่ว่า สุลต่านมูฮัมหมัดซาห์ เหตุการณ์ครั้งสำคัญนี่นำมาการเผยแผ่จากราชสำนักสู่ราษฎรแห่งราชอาจักรปัตตานีที่จาก เดิมนับถือศาสนาพุทธ
(Syukri,1985,p.16-18) การเปลี่ยนมานับถือศาสนาอิสามของอาณาจักรปัตตานีทำให้เกิดความสำคัญชื่อมต่อความเป็นสมาชิกของโลกมาลายู และเป็นอัตลักษณ์ร่วมกันของโลกมลายูกับอาณาจักรปัตตานี และแตกต่างจากสยามที่เป็นชาวพุทธ

ศตวรรษที่ 16 ปัตตานีมีความเจริญรุ่งเรื่องทางการค้าเป็นอย่างยิ่งโดยเป็นศูนย์กลางทางการค้าที่ยิ่งใหญ่ โดยมีเรือสำเภาจากญี่ปุ่น จีน ชวา อินเดีย และอาหรับ มาเทียบท่าลุ่มแม่น้ำปัตตานี จน คศ 1516 ชาวยุโรปเริ่มทางเข้ามาค้าขาย เริ่มโดยชาวโปรตุเกส ตามด้วยฮอลันดาเป็นชาติที่สองในปี คศ 1602 และชาวอังกฤษ บริษัทอินเดียตะวันออกในปี 1611 (Syukri,1985,p.19,26,29)

ความเจริญรุ่งเรื่องนี่เองทำให้สยามในรัชสมัยสมเด็จพระนเรศวร คศ 1603 มีความประสงค์ครอบครองปัตตานีได้ยกทัพมาโจมตีราชอาณาจักรปัตตานีแต่ไม่เป็นผลสำเร็จ และในปี 1632 สยามต้องการขยายแสนยานุภาพข้าปกครองปัตตานี จึงยกทัพมาโจมตีเป็นครั้งที่สองแต่ก็ไม่สำเร็จ ทำให้ไม่พอพระทัย และในปี 1633 เข้ามาโจมตีเป็นครั้งที่สาม แต่ก็ไม่สำเร็จ หลังจากนั้นสยามได้ส่งคณะทูต มาปัตตานีเพื่อขอให้รายาปัตานี สมัยรายกูนิงอยู่ในการปกครองของสยาม แต่ก็ถูกรายกูนิงปฏิเสฐ และครั้งทีสี่ โดยเจ้าเมืองนคร ก็ไม่สำเร็จ

หลังจากอาณาจักรปัตตานีเป็นรัฐอิสลามก็มีความสัมพันธไมตรีที่แน่นแฟ้น กับรัฐมลายูต่างๆในคาบสมุทร โดยเฉพาะ เมือง ปาหัง และยะโฮร์ เช่น เจ้าหญิง Raja Ungu ได้อภิเษภสมรสกับสุลต่าน Sultan Abdul-Ghafur Mohaidin Syah แห่งเมืองปาหัง (Syukri,1985,p.32)และมงกุฤราชกุมารแห่งยะโฮร์ Yang di Pertuan Muda Johore ราชโอรสองค์ที่สองของ Sultan Ali Jalla Abdul Jalil Syah ได้อภิเษกสมรสกับเจ้าหญิง Raja Kining ซึ่งเป็นธิดาของ Raja Ungu และสุลต่านปาหัง (Syukri,1985,p.38).

การสมรสระหว่างราชอาณาจักรนี่เป็นการนำปัตตนีเข้าไปมีความสัมพันธ์ทางการเมืองร่วมกับเมืองแห่งคาบสมุทรมาลายู ยิงกว่านั้นเป็นการนำไปสู่สายสัมพันธ์ทางเศรษฐกิจ สังคม และความเป็นเครือญาติของโลกมลายูที่เป็นผลต่อจิตสำนึกทางประวัติศาสตร์ร่วมกันของประชาชนในภูมิภาคนี้ ซึ่งตรงกันข้ามกับความสัมพันธิกับสยามที่มีความแตกต่างกันทางวัฒนธรรม ที่เป็นผลมาจากการรับศาสนาอิสลามของปัตตานี

ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปัตตานีกับราชวงค์กลันตันปรากฏชัดเจน ครั้งเมื่อ รายากูนิงสวรรคตและไม่มีรัชทายาทสืบราชวงค์ปัตตานี จนได้เชิญทูลโอรสรายากลันตันมาปกครองอาณาจักรปัตตานี ถึงแม้ว่า รายาเออร์มัสเป็นรายาปัตตานีไม่กีปีก็สวรรคต ทำให้ราชโอรสพระนามว่ารายาเออร์มัสจะห์ครองราชต่อพระบิดา(Syukri,1985,p.44).

ประวัติศาสตร์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสยามกับปัตตานีเปลี่ยนแปลงใน พระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลก แห่งสมัยราชวงค์จักรี ทรงต้องการรวบรวมหัวเมืองปัตตานี โดยให้พระยากลาโหมได้ยกทัพมาโจมตีปัตตานีของสุลต่านมูฮำมัดจนได้รับชัยชนะ ซึ่งเป็นประวัติศาสตร์ครั้งแรกที่สยามเข้ามาปกครองได้แต่งตั้งผุ้สำเร็จราชการปกครองเมืองจาก กรุงเทพแทนสุลต่าน ต่านกูลามีดิน Tengku Lamidin ได้รับเลือกจากกรุงเทพให้เป็นเจ้าเมือง และให้ส่งเครืองราชบัณณาการไปยังกรุงเทพ เพื่อแสดงความจงรักภักดี

ใน ร 1 ทรงให้ Muang Saiburi and Kedah อยู่ในความดูแลของเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช ส่วนตรังกานูและปัตตานีอยู่ในความดูแลของเมืองสงขลา ต่อมา 1786 อังกษฏได้ขอเช่าเกาะ Penang และ 1791 อังกษฏขอเช่าดินแดนตรงข้ามเกาะหมาก จากไทรบุรี ทั้งนี้การให้เช่าเกาะ Penang ระหว่างสุลต่านเคดาห์กับอังกษฏนั้นไม่ได้ถามความเห็นชอบจากสยาม (อาหมัด,, 2528;p88,98)

ในปี 1808 ร1 มอบให้เจ้าเมืองสงขลาเป็นผุ้ดูแลควบคุมเมืองปัตตานีแทนเจ้าเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช โดยมีเมืองใกล้เคียงอื่นๆ อยู่ในความดูแลสงขลา ได้แก่ ยะหริ่ง หนองจิก รามันห์ ระแงะ สาย ยะลา กลันตัน และตรังกานู ต่อมาในปี 1813 สมัย ร 2 พระยากลันตันมีความขัดแย้งกับพระยาตรังกานู ทำให้พระยากลันตันขอไปขึ้นต่อนครศรีธรรมราช ส่วนหัวเมืองมลายู อีก 2 เมือง คือ ไทรบุรี และเปรัคยังคงอยู่กับนครศรีธรรรรมราช (อาหมัด,, 2528;p117)

อังกษฤได้เข้ามาแทรกแซงกิจการภายในของรัฐภายใต้การปกครองของสยามในขณะนั้น คือ เปรัค ตรังกานู ไทรบุรี และกลันตัน โดยส่งข้าหลวงของอังกฤษ เข้าไปเจรจาและช่วยเหลือในรูปแบบต่างๆ เพื่อให้เลิกจงรักภักดีต่อสยาม เช่นกรณีรัฐเปรัค ปี 1826 อังกฏษได้ส่งทหารและเรือรบเข้าไปเจรจากับสุลต่านเปรัค ให้ทำสัญญากับอังกษฤ โดยมีใจความว่าเพื่อเป็นการตอบแทนที่อังกษฤจะเข้าช่วยเหลือต่อต้านผู้ใดก็ตามที่จะคุกคามเอกราชของรัฐสุลต่าน โดยไม่ให้ติดต่อกับสยาม และไม่ต้องส่งเครืองบรรณนาการ ทำให้สุลต่านเปรัคหันไปขึ้นต่ออังกฏษ และปลดข้าราชการสยามออกจากรัฐไป


จนปี 1817 ปัตตานีถูกแบ่งออกเป็น เมืองเล็กๆ คือ ปัตตานี ยะหริ่ง หนองจิง ยะลา รามัญ สายบุรี และระแงะ ต่อมาในปี 1831-1832 ได้เกิดกบฏต่อต้านสยามอีกครั้ง ซึ่งเป็นการรวมตัวกันระหว่างรัฐ ได้แก่ ตรังกานู กลันตัน เคดะห์ เปรัก เซอร์ลางอร์ และเซียด แต่ก็ล้มเหลว จนกระทั้งปี 1826 สนธิสัญญาเบอร์นี Berney Treaty รัฐมลายู เคดะห์ กลันตัน ตรังกานู และปัตตานี ได้ถูกรวมอยู่ใต้อำนาจของสยามอย่างเป็นทางการ

ชาวมาเลในเคดาห์มีความคิดต่อต้านสยาม และมีความพยายามจะเป็นอิสระหลลายครั้ง เช่น ในปี 1838 รัฐเคดะห์ โจมตีสยามในเคดะและขับไร่ออกไป โดยชาวปัตตานีให้ความร่วมมือ จน ร.4 ทรงตระหนักว่าการทำครอบครองเคดาห์มีแต่จะทำให้เกิดความเสียหาย ในที่สุดสยามจึง โดยให้สิทธิแก่เจ้าเมืองเคดาห์กลับคืน 1842 แต่ต้องส่งเครืองราชบันณาการทุกสามปี ดอกไม้เงินดอกไม้ทอง Bungamas ทั้งนี่การที่สยามไม่เข้าไปเกียวข้องกิจการของเคดาห์นั้น เนื่องจากเกรงว่าอังกษฏจะแสดงความเป็นปรปักษ์ จึงเอาใจอังฤษฏเพือรักษาเอกราชของสยาม


จน 1895 ร.5 ได้มีการจัดระเบียบการปกครองหัวเมืองปักใต้ใหม่ เพื่อหวังว่าเป็นการสร้างระบบป้องกันบูรณภาพในดินแดนของสยามต่อการคุกคามของอังกษฤและฝรั่งเศษโดยรวมเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช เมืองพัทลุง และเมืองสงขลา จัดตั้งเป็น มณฑลนครศรีธรรมราช โดยสำนักงานอยู่ที่เมืองสงขลา ส่วนเมือง ที่เหลือ คือ ปัตตานี กลันตัน ตรังกานู เคดาห์ และเปอร์ลิส ได้ประการยกเลิกการปกครองแบบ สุลต่าน แล้วให้รวมเป็นมณฑลหนึ่งของสยาม ในปี 1902 ได้ให้มีการผนวกปัตตานี สายบุรี ยะลา และนราธิวาส เป็น เมืองในสังกัด หรือ Jajahan เข้าเป็นดินแดนของสยาม เป็นมฑทลปัตตานี


ปี 1906 การดำเนินการจัดระเบียบการปกครองใหม่อีกครั้ง รัฐปัตตานีได้ถูกรวมกลุ่มกันเรียกว่า บริเวณเจ็ดหัวเมือง นั้นเหลือเพียง 4 เมือง คือ
1) เมืองปัตตานี ประกอบด้วย หนองจิก ยะหริ่ง และปัตตานี
2)เมืองยะลา ประกอบด้วย รามันห์ และยะลา
3)เมืองสายบุรี ยังคงเดิม
4)เมืองระแงะ ยังคงเดิม แต่เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นบางนรา และเป็นนราธิวาส


ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสยามกับอังกฤษ ในปี 1909 มีการตกลงระหว่างกันภายใต้สัญญา Anglo-Saimese Treaty 1909 ภายใต้ข้อตกลงนี่ทำให้รัฐบาลสยามยอมยกเลิกอธิปไตยเหนือดินแดนไทรบุรี กลันตัน ตรังกานู และเปอร์ลิส สนธิสัญญานี่อังกฏษได้ให้สยามกู้เงินจำนวน 4 ล้านดอลล้า เพื่อนำไปพัฒนากิจการรถไฟในประเทศ ซึ่งเป็นการ สิ้นสุดความเป็นราชอาณาจักรมลายูอย่างสิ้นเชิง ( Harrison, 1967,p211)

ภายหลังการยกดินแดนทั้งสี่ให้อยู่ภายใต้การดูและของอังกฏษนั้น ทำให้การการแทรกแซงการปฏิรูปการปกครองหัวเมืองปัตตานีผ่อนคลายลง แต่ก็มีการต่อต้านการปกครองของสยามเกิดขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง


ในปี 1916 ได้เปลี่ยนจากคำว่าเมือง เป็นจังหวัด ทำให้ทณฑลปัตตานี ประกอบด้วย จังหวัดปัตตานี จังหวัดยะลา จังหวัดสายบุรี และจังหวัดนราธิวาส ในปี 1931 ได้ยุบจังหวัดสายบุรีลงเป็นอำเภอหนึ่งที่ขึ้นต่อจังหวัดปัตตานี และได้ยกเลิกการปกครองแบบมณฑล ทำให้มณฑลปัตตานีเป็นจังหวัดปัตตานี ยะลา และนราธิวาส ขึ้นตรงต่อกระทรวงมหาดไทยในปี 1933 เป็นต้นมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
