The study of “ Gender Role concerning Reproductive Health of Premarital Sex among Thai Adolescences : A Case Study in Songkhla” was aimed at achieving two objectives :
1) to study the characteristics of the population, economy, and society of premarital adolescences in Songkhla, and
2) to study gender role concerning reproductive health of premarital sex among Thai adolescences in Songkhla
The case study used included the 409 adolescences at the age between 12-24 years old who stay in Songkhla. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistic including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The analysis was put the emphasis on gender category (male-female) and area category (rural-urban). The result of this study revealed that most of the adolescences in this study were female (60.9%) and the male adolescences were 39.1%. It was found that 50.9% of the adolescences was in the rural area while 49.1% was in the urban area. Most of the male and female adolescences shared some similar characteristics concerning population, economy, and society ; namely, they are Buddhist, they stay with their parents (in the case that their parents are staying together), their fathers are general workers, they are the oldest son/daughters in their family, they have three sisters/brothers, they are studying, and they have the average income. As for gender role concerning reproductive health of premarital sex, it was found that the male and female adolescences both pay attention to and do something concerning reproductive health for their sexual behaviour. As well, there are family planning in order to prevent themselves from unwanted pregnancy. There are, too, similar aspects in unwanted pregnancy and abortion in both the male and female adolescences which clearly express the sex equality between them : the female adolescence have themselves their own rights about reproductive health and the male adolescences participate in the responsibility towards the reproductive health of the female adolescences to some extent. The suggestions for policy development are as follows:
1) The policy and activity related to reproductive health should be assigned according to adolescences’ needs.
2) The government’s services related to reproductive health should be more exposed to adolescences.
3) The reproductive health’s services should be aimed at the gender role
4) The service projects should consider community as the center.
The suggestions for putting into practice are also included as follows:
1) Promote more knowledge and understanding towards reproductive health to adolescences by getting the adolescence’s representatives to pass on knowledge and experience to the next generation.
2) Promote the role of teachers, parents, and public health staff members in giving the understanding of reproductive health to adolescences.
3) Promote the use of condom whenever the adolescences have sexual intercourse with their lovers and their friends.
4) The place should be arranged especially for adolescences
5) The curriculum of sex education should be provided to adolescences in community.
6) The adolescences in community should be provided with the proper value judgment about sex.
7) In educational instates, the students dormitories should be provided in order to decrease the risk in having sexual intercourse among adolescences.
